Dear humans,
On the quest for positivity, we want to open a post about book recommendations. Please recommend your favorite books here.
No self-promo or cross promo allowed. (AKA, don’t have a friend come on recommending your book; this thread is only for readers who absolutely love a book.)
There are a few rules, as follows:
Warn other readers about sensitive material.
Do not recommend books that glorify child abuse, child rape, etc. (AKA, do not recommend books like Lolita. There are other sites for discussions of that sort of book. This site is not one of them.)
Do not recommend books that glorify bullying. If the book you enjoy features bullying that also includes a strong redemption arc, please feel free to recommend it.
Please note if the book is a ménage, reverse harem, or harem title.
Please warn if the book requires a 18+ content advisory warning.
Do not slam other books, even if you don’t agree with a recommendation. It is OK to reply to a comment should the recommender have forgotten to include a flag. (So if you see a reverse harem book that wasn’t labeled as a reverse harem, please comment! That’s okay.)
It is not okay to go EW REVERSE HAREM! Gross!
Play nice with others. Thank you!
This week, the female read After Dark by Jayne Castle. She found it to be amusing, although the copy she purchased had an unfortunate number of formatting errors and similar, which made for some difficulties with the reading experience. She wishes to slap the publisher for making such a shoddy ebook. That said, it was enjoyable, and she liked it, so she is willing to recommend it, just go in aware that the book has some issues on the formatting front which can become very annoying very quickly.
But it was still a fun book. After Dark includes some adult subject matter and enough sex that we of the Furred & Frond Management wouldn’t suggest anyone below the age of 16 to read. 18+ might be better, as at least one of the scenes was a little more explicit than perhaps some parents would like.
(It was fairly tame as far as sex scenes go, but it was definitely for mature eyes only.)
The female liked it enough she bought After Glow and will see how she enjoys that one.
It is a third-person Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance hybrid. (In our opinion. The story has qualities of both genres.)
One… two… three… go!

The Power of the Rellard
It’s a book meant for children but its honestly my favorite book. Well written and magical.
Lucy becomes ill and her siblings make up a series of trials as a game to make her feel better. But strange and magical things began happening as the trials progress, leading them to a secret power.

Semester Aboard (More than Magic Book 1) by Elizabeth Kirk. There is no sex in the first book but there is some in the third book M/F. The main character is a collage student who is taking a semester on a ship that teaches collage courses and is cruising South America. Jen (main character), sees something she was not supposed to and learns magic is real and she then learns she is a witch. It has vampires, werewolves and elementals. It also has violence. (BTW the prelude is adult only and has m/m sex.) I really enjoyed it.

Also I cannot spell college. Sorry.
The Sneaky Kitty Critic
We are fluent in typo, so please don’t worry about it. 🙂

Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. Made me laugh and also made me sure I was missing some of the jokes. It is the first of a series, but they stand alone. I know enough of knitting and crochet and their addictive natures to laugh, and since I work with many man, I sometimes feel immersed in an alien culture.

Go dust bunnies! Loved that story line till they got away from the cities. Michael Anderle’s Kurithan gambit is a fun read (sifi/fantasy that’s lots of fun, but full of creative swearing). Long series though (I think it was 28 books) with many branch off stories from fan/other authors contributions.
Lynn
Forgot to mention that is sort of a military so a bit of violence. Oops.
Andrew
Love that series. As well as the Brownstone series. Lots of cussing and violence though.

The guild codex series by Annette Marie. It’s an urban fantasy where the main character is just a normal human put in the middle of a supernatural society. Fun read.
SUSAN WARD
If you like Georgian Romance .novels with a great deal of snarky humour and and a amazing characters and a touch of drama try Stella Riley. She has written several books in the Georgian Rockcliffe series and also a Roundhead and Cavalier series full of drama divided loyalties and in spite of it all a great deal.of humour. Some of the descendants of this series appear in the Georgian ones. I am currently awaiting the publication of her new one.
snapdragon
Toni McGhee Causey’s Bobby Faye books — Really fun books they have action, explosions, heavy on interest and rather lite on any actual sex. The first book is called Charmed and Dangerous.
Jim Butcher has the Codex Alegra Series which is awesome – Much more epic fantasy the first book is called the Furies of Calderon.
Jean Johnson has a great military/sifi series called Theirs Not to Reason Why and the first book is called A soldier’s Duty — What would you do to save the future? Follow Ia and find out if she manages to do so.
Becca Zajac
T.A. White – 10/10 recommend. Her books are all slowburn and paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi. They are all written in single POV. Of her 4 series, I love 3 of them and reread them frequently. The 4th not so much but may be to your liking.
Pathfinder is book 1 of the Broken Lands series and is my favorite. Tbh not sure of the genre it fits in. I think its dystopian? If that’s the one set in the future post an apocalyptic event. Lead is Shae and she is a pathfinder, someone well versed in beasts and navigating through the wilderness. She is AWESOME.
Then there is the Aileen Travers series. Aileen was a journalist with the army and got turned into vampire one night then woke up in a dumpster. This series is nice because she is not a Mary Jane. She fails and gets her butt kicked, many a time and uses her brain.
Next is the Firebird series, though I don’t remember the title of book 1. This is set in space which had me skeptical at first, but very glad I took a chance on it.
The reason I like her books is because of the world building and the consistency of her characters. The books are well written and entertaining.

I’ve been re-reading CR Daems works. They are military sci-fi(is that a category). My Favorites of his series is The Shadow Ryana and The Riss series. All of his books have a strong female lead. Absolutely love them.

Yeppers, Jayne Castle also writes as Jayne Ann Krentz & you might enjoy her Arcane Society series. Ooo book recommendations. So many books, so little time! Andrea K Host Touchstone Trilogy, a bit YA but good. Viola Grace writes novellas more than books but enjoyed her Obscure Magic series. Thea Harrison Elder Races series was great. Shelly Laurenstons Pride/Pack/Honey Badger books good but definately adult. Same for Dana Marie Bell. Less sex, but good plots/romance for Marjorie M Liu’s Dirk & Steele series. Sci-fi romance in the beginning books of the Liaden Universe by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller. Jaqueline Carey had a great 2-book f-f romance in Santa Olivia series. And I liked the series but looks like it’s not gonna have an ending(?) Anthony Francis Skindancer series. Same for Kai Gracen slow burn m-m romance by Rhys Ford, not sure there will be another book.
