Hey, folks. (I swear, one day the cats will get off their lazy rumps and do some work around this place, but in the meantime, you get a very tired me.)
It has come to my attention that my birthday falls on a Tuesday next year. This means the mythical double release rule is invoked. Doggone Mess had already been selected as next year’s birthday book… but as it’s on a Tuesday, you’re also getting The Vampire of Montana: an Agents of the Royal States Novel.
You’re welcome.
Now with the good news out of the way, I’m going to dive into the news destined to sadden some people. Yes, the Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) series will be coming to a close. I’ve already selected the last title in the series, which will conclude the primary arc that’s been showing up time and time again throughout the books. (Hint: deals with the End of Days and certain characters surrounding those events.)
The lead character will be Kanika from Whatever for Hire, and the final book will be entitled Heir of Hell.
In good news, I have a bunch of loose threads that need to be closed first, so I will be addressing that. Some books I had initially planned simply won’t get written, which is a pity, but they don’t really fit well in the puzzle that is the series, and while they’d be fun to write… every book in the series does serve a purpose in the series. (Go ahead and disagree with me… but considering I’m the one writing it… I might actually know what I’m talking about this time.)
In no particular order, here are the titles of the books you can expect in the main Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) series. (Note: Doggone Mess and 101 Ways to Die will release in that order. Everything after, excluding Heir of Hell, is up for negotiation depending on how I feel about certain plot threads.)
Doggone Mess (Joyce and Wayne, extended version (a LOT extended) from Dirty Deeds 1. Recommended reading: Hoofin’ It.)
101 Ways to Die (Dirty Deeds 2, will be individually released after the exclusivity period for the title is over. There will be a follow up story with these two characters, but it’s a side story I’ll either plunk into the main release or I will put into a forthcoming anthology.) No recommended reading required, but Bailey and Sam are notable secondary characters in this story.
Cobra Chicken (Recommended reading: Plaidypus.)
How Hawkward
Probable Caws
Whiskers on Kittens
On Point (The Celestial Unicorn Novel; Bailey and Sam trilogy recommended reading)
Heir of Hell (Entire series is recommended reading for this one.)
Continuations to be released in forthcoming anthology: Serial Killer Princess 2, Leashed I Could Do. The anthology will release prior to Heir of Hell. There is a possibility of two themed anthologies, but I’m chewing on if I have enough short story and novella material.
I have some room for wiggling in an extra book or two, and I might depending on how much closure points I accomplish within each title. Every book serves a purpose in these final titles, although I am giving myself a little wiggle room to add a book or two along the way.
In addition to this, I will be concluding the Magically Hellish trilogy (Client from Hell) and the Otter series, which is a spinoff regarding the lab animal arcs focused on in Catnapped and the Magically Hellish trilogy. I am expecting 5 or 6 total titles in the Otter series, and it will be a traditional series following one lead character (and her love interest) throughout the series. It just didn’t fit in well with the main series.
And that will be it and that will be all.
So, with the bad news out of the way, the good news is this: I WILL be doing a new paranormal/urban fantasy romantic comedy series, because the truth is, I write these for me to read, and life is boring without comedy for me. But, it will be a new pen name and a whole new world, and there will be no appearances from old friends from the Mag Rom Com world books.
I’m beginning the preliminary brainstorming process on the series, but my current favored concept is a precinct of magical single cops who, one by one, fall to romance on a hilarious ride none of them expect. Sometimes the cop will be the lead, sometimes the cop won’t be the lead. There shall be dragons, unicorns, sentient talking cats, regular cats, smol angry songbirds, also sentient, and a kitchen sink cast. Bonus: angels, but with heads this time! I haven’t picked the city for it, but I might also create a brand new city I plunk somewhere in the United States at my whim. I’m undecided at this point in time.
Sadly, while I will use an alternate Earth for the setting, let’s just say the cast of any divine-type beings will not be based on anything we have and know; it’ll all be new with an entirely new magic system.
But regarding the Magical Romantic Comedy series, all things must come to an end, and in reality, I’m close to finishing what I started in Playing with Fire. (Albeit Bailey did get a mind of her own resulting in her own trilogy, where my original plan had been to have them be side characters while others dealt with the consequence shenanigan. We all saw how well that worked out.)
So, that’ll be all she wrote. Yes, there were some books with titles I bought covers for that won’t be used. For reasons. Some might be turned into novellas and short stories to be put into anthologies, but some won’t.
The series was always intended to end, but I’ve finally gotten to the point where I, as a creator, can definitively point out where that end is.
Thanks for the ride, folks–and I hope you’ll enjoy the next adventure once this rodeo hits curtains closed. But I’ll leave you with this: it’s not ending because of unhappiness or any of that. This is where it was always meant to go, and it is the natural conclusion to a very, very long journey.
Could I write fifty or sixty of these for the hell of it and fun? Sure, I could… but the instant I brought in the headless angels, the incubi, the succubi, and one hell of a hero, and Him, all seeds planted in book one, Heir of Hell was the intended conclusion to all of the chaos these beings brought to the world.
And yes, Kanika is truly the best choice of character for the finale.
There’s one last adventure before she gets the happily ever after her and her family deserves…

Amazing! Great news (and sad sniffles)! I’m so thrilled you and ending this series because that was your long-term plan and not because of stupid twits. However, even with the end in sight, there are still some amazing titles to look forward to. Even better is the knowledge that a new world is forthcoming. Thank you for all your outstanding writing and I hope you manage to get some rest and time for the husband and fur-babies. You deserve it.

While I’ll be sorry to see the end of the series (eventually), it’s going to be a fabulous ride! And since you’ll still be writing other stuff, I’m a happy camper!

Sob – for the ending of the series. Yay! for the new series. Such mixed emotions, but I know that your work will be worth reading, even in a new series. I am so looking forward to your new books, even though the old series (plural) will be coming to a close. (Sigh …..)

Happy/sad! Can hardly wait for the new adventures you will be taking us on 😀

Will you let us know your new pen name ? I don’t want to miss any of your work

When the time comes, yes.

Question for you. From your email, can I conclude that the sequels to : Steelheart, Wild Wolf, and Up in Smoke are no longer going to be written?
The Sneaky Kitty Critic
Uhm, what? No? This is specific only to the Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) world. Those are in entirely different world/series.

‘Tis said that all good things must end; if this is how it goes, so be it. It’s been a great ride for me so far, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next titles as well as the new series.

I am sad to read that the end of the MagRom is coming but there are still plenty of books to be written. As far as the new proposed series, I look forward to a new paranormal world with characters to fall in love with. But angels with heads? That might take some getting used to.
Hanna
There’s something to be said for having an ending, I feel like it gives the story arcs more meaning that way. I’ll be sad to see the end of the characters stories, but excited to move on to your new series!

I love your rom-com books! “Satin” has become one of my favorite recurring characters. 🙂 I’m sorry that you’re seeing an ending to the series, but hey! more books! I will buy them all faithfully and sniffle when the last is printed but I remain grateful that they are being written at all! So, happy writing!
Candy
Sooo sad that series is ending but happy that might give you more time to write the next book in the other series I’ve been dying for you to have the next installment come out… (please say yes soon lol) and please let us know the new pen name you will be writing under
Dawn Wheeler
I LOVE the magical rom com series! I have every book. They make me laugh out loud. I will be sad to see them go but it sounds like there will be several more to read before the series ends. Lucy is my favorite character. He’s hilarious. I love your writing. Can’t wait for the Hypnos series to be written. Also love the Lowrance vampire novels. Please don’t stop writing. You’re my favorite author!
Dana
Will we know via sneaky kitty email what the pen name name of the new rom com will be under?
The Sneaky Kitty Critic

I’m sad to hear it, but all good things must come to an end. and sometimes it’s just a natural progression coz its never good to keep on with something as you run the risk of losing your audience and repeating yourself. on the plus side, I’m looking forward to a new series….so, yaaay. do keep writing as I do so enjoy a good story.
nic gingras
Dawn, try the Witch and Wolf series – they are just as good as the RomComs
nic gingras
I hava cataracts and reading is becoming more and more difficult. That’s why I love your audio books so much. I’ve listened to Beneath a Blood Moon 3 times now and will probably start it again next week. Is there any chance you will be making the rest of the Witch and Wolf series available in Audio? When I read The Winter Wolf and realized that Richard and Alex where the same characters from “A Christmas to Remember” in the Water Witch anthology my heart did a little happy dance. Thanks for sharing your wonderful stories.
dee semple

The Sneaky Kitty Critic
You are forgetting the expansion you have not read yet.
Jesse
