I wish I could say I was having a happy book birthday today, but unfortunately, I’m not. Kobo deployed the book with the placeholder file (which is something they require thus resulting in an unmitigated disaster for those who purchased the book at this vendor.
I have delisted the book to prevent other readers from purchasing it, and I have uploaded a new version.
If you use Kobo and you purchased the book, please DO write to customer service asking for them to either a: refund you or b: give you the correct copy. I did everything I could, including numerous uploads before the preorder launch. This is unfortunately a Kobo problem, and it’s not a Kobo problem I can solve beyond send a message to customer service and hope that they take shorter than two weeks to fix it. (Pets in Space had this same issue, apparently, and that’s how long it took to correct.)
I apologize, because this is not the reader experience I want.
As those I know who have had this issue with Kobo have not been able to get corrections, I am delisting all preorders from Kobo and will only set them up with the polished final copies of the book moving forward. (And as Kobo’s website showed everything as fine, including file size, number of pages, and so on, I simply have zero way of being able to check if the book will be correct.)
So, to make certain readers are able to have the best experience, delisting preorders and setting them back up is my only realistic option. Delisting of Kobo preorders has already been queued.
And yes, I would rather lose the money than risk readers having such a poor experience again. At least in the case of Amazon, when their preorders fail, the preorder is cancelled. Nobody is sent anything, and no money is transferred.
For those of you who have bought copies of the original book, please hit up my contact form with a copy of your Kobo receipt (copy paste the text of the email into your message, beginning with hello and ending with the grand total), and I will email you with an ePub version of the book (distributed through Bookfunnel). I will use the email address associated with the receipt for emailing the ePubs. If you would like a signed bookplate, please conclude your message with your name and your mailing address, and I will send you a little envelope of goodies in way of apology.
A new version of the book will be available on Kobo within the next few hours.
I have already gone ahead and escalated to ask Kobo to just auto refund everyone with the affected book, but I do not know if they will be able to do this.
I’ve done what I can, and if these measures are insufficient, well, I apologize. There is nothing more I can do than this for you at this stage.
Here is the obligatory dropping of links to the books, with Kobo’s link removed.
The yearly floods in Stonecreek inevitably claim lives, but when Valerie pulls a refugee from the turbulent waters, she uncovers a dark secret about her home.
For most, there is sanctuary to be had in their high-walled houses.
For outsiders shunned by those in power, there is only exile or death.
To create a better future for Stonecreek, Valerie must become a light in the dark—even if it means she joins the ranks of those doomed to be purged from the city-state’s stony streets.

What should have been a break in a long chain of unsolved robberies leads Detective Valor Lovell into the dark world of murder, organ theft, and the black market. His informant, Miranda, shines light on the thefts tearing through Cauldron City and how they connect to the dead weight case continuing to thwart the detectives of Precinct #153.
To complicate matters, her security is his problem.
One underground group wants her dead. Another wants her alive but out of the hands of law enforcement. But the third, as mysterious as the woman determined to change her colors, could lead to the downfall of everything he holds dear.

Happy Reading, and once again, my apologies for how this has turned out.
To those who message me on the contact form: please note that I will be sending out the copies of the book, via bookfunnel, once a day starting late tonight, so please be patient with me. I know this sucks, but there is only one of me and 153 of you.
And yes, the irony of how many readers who purchased from Kobo is absolutely not lost on me. Tomorrow, I might even find the number to be amusing. Today? I’m going to go eat my feelings.
The upcoming releases page has been updated with a removal of all Kobo links.
Happy reading.

I appreciate so much all the effort you went to. I was already refunded the cost of the book by Kobo and bought it through Patreon instead. I wouldn’t want you to loose out on the well deserved compensation 🙂
